The oil heated up (to around 96 C which is normal here like Okeanis said) and expanded into the top oil filler rubber pipe, which has perished and is being replaced under warranty tomorrow. The lesson learned is that the oil level has to be checked when the oil is HOT at normal working temperature, bike vertical, and there MUST be a small empty

KTM recomends 5w - 50 or 10w-50 Motorex FULLY Synthetic.A friend picked up some oil at a dealership for me that is Motorex 15w-50 partially synthetic. The head meckanic there said thats what they use on all KTMs.He said the fully synthetic was hard on clutchs on the dirt bikes that were run hard. My first thought is to stay with the spec. oil.

Well I'm just in the middle of moving from the midwest back to Colorado and last night I was fiddling with my bike before packing it up and noticed with my headlamp that I had a sludge in the bottom of my radiator overflow bottle. The bike is a 2007 KTM 990 Adventure. I took the bottle off and dumped out the fluid that was in it.
