For my diesels, both IDI and TDI, which I have re-ringed (never needed pistons), I would not idle the car much, but rather drive it fairly hard, and try to avoid extended times of lower power settings. I would consider a two pronged approach: 1. Review breakin instructions, and 2. compression check and leakdown check the engine on each cylinder.

The water pump is a weak point and is often changed with the timing belt to avoid problems. If the water pump seizes it can strip teeth off the timing belt. If the teeth strip the camshaft will get out of synchronisation with the crankshaft and the pistons and valves will meet!! However. The engine is designed with a deliberately weak rocker

2006 1.9L TDI complete engine for sale. I have a good running 1.9 liter TDI engine pulled from my 2006 Jetta with 78000K. My wife ran over something in the road and put a small crack in one of the engine block mounting positions. The insurance company replaced the entire engine and i was able to keep the original engine. The crack can be welded.

I have a 1.9 which is the 102 engine and I can get from scotland to cornwall [550miles] on a full tank - well, until the light comes on which means I have ten litres left. That is with me driving at a solid 80-85mph on motorway. I think that works out about 33ish mpg. If you take it easy then it goes a lot further! Hope that helps.
TornadoRed. The life expectancy of a new car can be estimated, but there is no way to tell with a used model. Your '98 Jetta could last 100 miles, 100k miles, or even longer -- and no one here can narrow it down for you. But if you want it to last longer, then you need to get all the deferred maintenance up to date.

We did wiggle the actual connection into the tandem point and it felt loose but I am not sure how it fits into the pump, there was no hissing from it, we gave it a quick squirt with light oil to see if it went quiet but made no difference. 1jPFxhj.
